Philosophy Statement
I believe that children have the ability to exceed the expectations that are placed on them, so long as they are taught individually and as a class. If children are taught within an environment in which they feel secure, seen and heard, they are much more likely to put forth work, which shows their full potential as learners. I hope that the students that I teach will one day remember concepts learnt in my class, if not for their future career then for other facets within there day to day lives. I want students to feel inspired to think out side of the box, and to take risks within their work. I believe this is achievable (1) if I as a teacher am able to effectively get students excited about upcoming projects;(2) if students are made to feel comfortable and heard while in my classroom, and lastly; (3) if I as a teacher am able to encourage students to take there own concepts further than they have been explored and studied.
My role as a teacher is to provide sufficient information from a multitude of sources, ones that students can build upon to find there own sources of knowledge. It is key that students are given a good platform on which to design and think about their ideas. Designing lesson plans that will help students branch out from familiar concepts will allow me to gain the students respect and will set the tone for the desired level of work expected.
Self-discovery is ever evolving for children, it is important to give students the time to explore themselves and their feelings further. Developing units that the children can relate to will cultivate an environment in which children will contribute in class discussion so that their ideas are heard and can be included in the curriculum. Getting involved and teaching about their own and other communities is essential so that students have a broad understanding about cultures and norms outside of their own, so that their views are not limited or prejudice.
Using technology that students are familiar with is both gripping for the learners and educational for the teacher. The modern world is constantly evolving, and education should allow for students to progress with their surroundings. By combining modern subject areas and materials children are able to relate to their own lives and will be better versed in a multitude of areas.
Personally, teaching provides the opportunity to inspire students like past art teachers have inspired me. I have such fond memories of my art teachers and hope to instill these same sorts of memories into my future students. I have such an excitement to learn about art and to teach about art. I love new projects and want to share new ideas with young minds for years to come. I will strive to go above and beyond as an educator for the betterment of future students and for the livelihood of art and creative thinking.
Artist Statement
Growing up I have always been surrounded by art and creative minds. My parents are both graphic designers and both my grandfathers painted as a hobby. My grandfather on my mother’s side was particularly drawn to landscapes with meticulous line work, as he was an architect by trade. My grandfather on my fathers’ side was a pastor by trade and enjoyed painting portraits of all of his grandchildren in his spare time. Both my father and mother graduated from Cape TechniKon in Cape Town, South Africa. They started out their careers as cartoonists and slowly gravitated to a more sustainable career path in graphic design.
I have many memories as a child, paintbrush in hand from as young as 5 years old. My father took my school projects very seriously, I remember constructing a dress out of coke cans for my design class in grade 9, meticulously we sat hammering down empty cans and sewing them with wire to create a human sized dress to be worn for our class fashion show. On another occasion, I remember doing a project about owls with my mom, the project started out with research and very quickly gravitated to the aesthetics of the poster, each image had a corresponding colorful boarder before being placed on a ruled out square on the poster board, the project was color coordinated in bright greens, purples and pinks, I remember this so vividly.
I spent the beginning of my college career fighting against getting involved in a career in art. Deciding on a pre-veterinary track, I made it through two semesters of Calculus and a whole summer working on an alpaca farm before deciding I was having no fun with the school portion and switched back to my roots in a degree of Art Education. There is no better feeling than finding a path which every day brings me new exciting ideas, I have learnt so much during my time in art school. My passions are all over the place and I love trying out new methods of art. My primary art mediums of choice are oil painting and sculpture but I also thoroughly enjoy watercolors, printmaking, ceramics, and acrylic painting. I am particularly drawn to oil paints because of the richness of color they hold, and the numerous ways one can mix with linseed oil, Liquin or turpentine. Ceramics have a textural feel that you cannot find with many other mediums, the fluidity of throwing on a wheel and the therapeutic feel of smoothing out a surface brings me great joy.
Most of my art seems to come out with a “creepy” undertone, which is not intentional, but I suppose it gives my work a particular style. I enjoy the shock factor art can evoke, and I like the idea of making the viewer curious. Making my viewer turn around and say “oh my! What is that!” is what I am going for in my work. Taking a second glance and wondering what went through the artists head at the time is part of the fun of creating. I hope to grow my understanding in conveying mood in my art and hope to reach many art appreciators in ways they have not received art before.
